Smoke detection in domestic properties is normally seen as either battery operated detectors, or mains operated devices that require installation by qualified electricians. Whilst the battery operated units are cheap to buy and simple to install, there is always the danger of the battery running flat, meaning that the detector will not function. With the mains powered units, the problem of the battery is solved, but the expense and disruption involved often makes the installation hard to justify.
There is another option that mixes the benefits of both of these types of detectors… fitting smoke detection in conjunction with your intruder alarm. When fitted as part of the overall installation, the cost would be almost half of the mains operated version, but with the benefit of having no batteries to change.
The detectors are in operation 24 hours a day, regardless of whether or not the alarm is switched on. In the event of smoke being detected, both the internal and external sounders will operate, ensuring maximum sound levels and public notification are achieved. Should you have a system that is monitored; nominated key holders can be alerted giving an additional layer of notification.
As a general rule, install smoke detectors in the ground floor hall and landings. A heat detector should be fitted in the kitchen, the area where approximately 40% of house fires start. The use of a heat detector will eliminate what we have all done when burning the toast….. taking the battery out! |
